This handout is ideal to give your students an overview of what the text type essay is, what's most important when writing one, what its structure looks like, the differences between an opinion and a discursive essay and which phrases can be used in such a text.

Additionally, two sample essays are attached:

A one-page exercise sheet based on the two sample essays is also provided and encourages students to actively apply their previously acquired knowledge about essay writing. Among other activities, students analyse the texts, identify thesis statements, compare essay types, examine titles and recognise how arguments and counterarguments are presented.
