Practise key words from the rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl's Birthday Tea', by Rachel Schmidlechner and Nadja Grace Bodner.Use the pictures on pegs to play a fun game of hide and seek in the classroom, garden or house!1) colour the pictures2) cut them out3) stick them onto pegs4) hide the pegs in the garden / classroom / houseOnce all the pegs have been found (the children like to clip them on to their clothes!), they can be hidden again and so the game goes on!The pegs can be used for other games too:1) Children say what they can see. Another child has to find the peg: "I spy with my little eye BIRTHDAY CAKE!"You can give the player a clue: It's near the window! (point if the language is too difficult)Say: "cold, warmer, warmer, very hot!" (as they get closer to the hiding place)2) After the game, the children can keep their peg(s) as a bookmark.3) Hold up the pegs as the children hear the key words in the story.Have fun reading and rhyming with Brown Owl!

Take a look inside the books! How many words can you find? How many words have you learned? What can you see in the background? These six ABC challenges give children the chance to show off the language they have learned with the 'Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl' books. These ABC challenges also generate new language as children are encouraged to look carefully at the illustrations and ask the teacher for any words that they don't know, e.g. What's 'Pokal' in English? (book 1) What's 'Zaun' in English? (book 2) What's 'stricken' in English? (book 3) What's 'Sonnenschirm' in English? (book 4) What's 'Tulpe' in English) (book 5) What's 'Herd' in English? (Book 6)Alternatively they can practise their dictionary skills and look up words they need independently.Have fun reading and rhyming with Brown Owl!For more information about my rhyming picture books, please visit: readandrhyme.at
