Have you ever heard of a cinquain (pronounced 'sin-cane') poem before? It's a simple form of poetry that can be adapted to many topics.I have created this resource to describe animals and objects seen at the zoo.A cinquain is made up of 11 words and 5 lines. The 1st line is a colour (1 word)The 2nd line is the animal or thing seen at the zoo (2 words)The 3rd line is where the animal/thing is (3 words)The 4th line describes what you can do with it (4 words)The 5th line is an adjective to describe it (1 word)I really like this activity as firstly, it encourages children to be creative with language and secondly, it revises colours, animals, prepositions and adjectives at the same time.N.B. The examples I use in the worksheets are based on scenes from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl at the Zoo'.For more information please visit www.readandrhyme.at

Encourage children to look at their surroundings with this Brown Owl's spotter's list! This activity can be done ona school or a family visit to the zoo! All you need is to print the sheet and take a pencil with you. If you spot something on the list, tick it off/cross it out/circle it.How many animals can you find? Can you find the TOP SPOT? (in this case it's a panda).Extra: Colour the animals exactly as you find them.N.B. Use the version without the written word to teach other languages too!I hope you have fun learning English with Brown Owl!P.S. Brown Owl is the main character in my rhyming picture book series ‚Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl‘. These animals all come up in the rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl at the Zoo'. Play a round of SIMON SAYS to practise listening skills, concentration and key phrases from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl at the Zoo'.Furthermore these phrases expose children to the present continuous in an authentic context:E.g. Simon says, crocodiles are snoozing!(all children pretend to snooze like crocodiles)Simon says, wolves are howling!(all children howl like wolves)However if the teacher omits 'Simon Says', they must stand still. If a child does the action, then they are out.I like to play a few practice rounds first to make sure the children have got the hang of the game. The cards measure 15cm x 15cm and can be out into a foam dice. The teacher rolls the dice and gives the instruction. Alternatively print out the cards in a smaller size and use as instruction cards in your hand. This resource is included in my MEGA bundle of zoo resources too (ID: 198914)TIP: the cards can also be used for charades! A child chooses a card, does the action and the class has guess what it is.For more information about my teaching ideas and rhyming picture books series, please visit my website: www.readandrhyme.atHave fun reading and rhyming with Brown Owl!
