This teaching package is built around the song “The Hanging Tree” from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and uses it as an accessible entry point to explore music, emotions, and protest in the EFL classroom.
The material offers a sequence of interactive, student-centered tasks that guide learners from initial listening to deeper interpretation and finally to creative production. Students engage with the song through a visual listening activity, a movement-based discussion task, and a structured writing task in which they create their own short protest song.
Songs and film-related materials are highly motivating for students and create an authentic learning environment. By connecting language learning to a well-known movie context, this resource increases engagement and supports meaningful language use.
It encourages students to interpret lyrics, express opinions, and reflect on broader themes such as emotions, power, and protest. At the same time, no prior knowledge of the film is required, which makes the material flexible and easy to use in a variety of classroom contexts.
