This PowerPoint is perfect for introducing the topic of "films & movies" to your intermediate/advanced ESL students. It gets your students to talk about their favourite films, describe movie plots and compare watching films in the cinema vs at home. They even have to create their own movie plot based on words suggested by their classmates.
Ideal for B1/B2 students but can easily be adapted to younger learners as well.
Contents:
1. It starts off with a guessing game, in which the students receive hints and have to guess the described movie. The fewer hints they need, the more points they receive. Up next, they continue the game in pairs and come up with their own plot descriptions. They are provided with sentence starters to improve their vocab range.
2. Next they have to discuss six questions in pairs, e.g. what their least favourite movie genre is or whether they prefer watching a movie in the cinema or at home.
3. They are presented with the 5 most watched and the 5 most successful movies of all time. Possible discussion questions could be if they know all of the movies, if they agree with the lists, why they think the lists vary, etc.
4. Finally, the students have to get creative. They get together in small groups. On a sheet of paper, all students have to write down a variety of words (an adjective, a celebrity, a place, a time, etc.). Then they exchange the wordlists and based on their new list, they have to come up with a movie plot, which must be pitched to the class. A fun activity that will definitely get them talking :-)
If you need even more teaching materials on this topic, then here's the perfect activity game (describe, mime, draw) for you! :-) Or what about this worksheet on film genres and descriptive adjectives for intermediate learners?
