It is aimed to utilize the prior knowledge of (English-speaking) learners. Even though English is very different from German in many ways, there are also many similarities. And the best of all is the common vocabulary.

Words that are very similar either in their written form, their pronunciation or even both are called COGNATS. And these words form the cornerstone of the entire curriculum. Without vocabulary, we do not learn language. But if we already know the words, we start off with a jump start.
