Make advanced vocabulary practice fun and engaging with this speaking game focused on the food & nutrition! Your students will practice speaking, paraphrasing, and thinking creatively while reviewing 40 key words related to types of food, diets and nutrition.
🎯 Target level: B1 - B2
🕒 Duration: 15–30 minutes
👥 Group size: Ideal for 3 - 5 people per group
Included are 40 cards with a mix of food and nutrition vocabulary. There's a colourful version and a black-and-white printer-friendly version attached. The vocabulary matches Unit 4 in the school book way2go! 5, but is perfect for any unit on food and nutrition.
Divide the class into small groups (3 - 5 people each).
One student draws a card and describes the target word without using the provided words and phrases.
The others try to guess the target word as quickly as possible.
The student who guesses correctly earns a point and draws the next card.
If the class doesn't know the target vocabulary yet, you can allow your students to use the other words for describing the target words. Makes it easier for the students to paraphrase them.
You can also play a round where they can ONLY read out the given words and the others need to guess the target word - works only if the students are very familiar with the target terms.
Use the cards for a role-play activity. Each group draws 5 - 7 cards and prepares a short scene in which they must use the drawn target vocabulary.
If you need more materials on the topic, here are a PowerPoint and matching worksheet that deals with the topic on an advanced level. Make sure to check it out! :-) Or how about the vocab game "Find the Twins! Food & Vegetables Edition"?
Here you can find the same game, but focused on family and relationship-related vocabulary. Have fun! :-)
Klassenstufen: 8. Klasse, 10. Klasse, EF (10./11. Jhg.), Q1 (11./12. Jhg.), Q2 (12./13. Jhg.)
